Exploring the Wilderness: My 3-Day Winter Photography Expedition at Kanha National Park

Nestled in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha National Park is a heaven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers. I conducted a Winter Photography Expedition at Kanha National Park, catering to a small group of passionate photographers who seek to capture the park’s breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife. Known as the land of the majestic Barasingha and lush sal forests, it offers an unparalleled experience of India’s rich biodiversity. My recent three-day trip to this enchanting forest in the heart of winter was nothing short of magical.

Day 1: Arrival and the First Safari

We arrived at Kanha National Park in the early hours, greeted by the crisp winter air and a serene ambiance. The morning mist enveloped the landscape, lending an ethereal charm to the surroundings. After checking into a cozy wildlife resort near the Katiya Gate, we prepared for our first safari.

The morning safari set the tone for our adventure. As our open gypsy traversed the rugged trails, we were surrounded by towering sal trees and sprawling meadows. The highlight of the day was spotting a herd of Barasingha also called Swamp Deer in the misty morning, a true pride of Kanha National Park. Their majestic antlers emerged through the veil of fog, creating a sight that left us in awe.

Day 2: Morning Safari and the Spirit of Kanha National Park

The next day began with a pre-dawn wake-up call. Winter mornings in Kanha are breathtaking—the chill in the air, the blanket of fog, and the anticipation of encountering the elusive tiger add to the thrill. As we ventured deeper into the forest, the symphony of chirping birds and rustling leaves welcomed us.

Our patience was rewarded when we spotted a tigress leisurely walking along the trail. Her sheer presence was commanding, and the sound of her movement through the dry leaves was spellbinding. The sighting was brief but unforgettable.

The rest of the day was dedicated to exploring the park’s rich flora and fauna. From Indian bison (gaur) to langurs swinging from tree to tree, every moment was a testament to the vibrancy of Kanha’s ecosystem.

Day 3: The Final Safari and Departure

The final morning safari was bittersweet. The forest was alive with activity as the first rays of sunlight pierced through the mist, illuminating the dew-kissed leaves. A family of Barasingha (swamp deer), endemic to Kanha, caught our attention. Watching the fawns play under the watchful eyes of their mothers was a heartwarming experience.

The journey back to the lodge was accompanied by the calls of peacocks and the sight of kingfishers darting across water bodies. As we packed our bags, a sense of gratitude filled me for the memories created in this wondrous land.
